I.P. Pavlov Museum

Academician I.P. Pavlov's Memorial House-Museum

The small wooden house with an attic in Ryazan, which have a modest memorial board with an inscription "Here was born and lived from 1849 to 1870 academician I.P. Pavlov", is one of the most memorial places. In this house I.P. Pavlov's museum was opened on March 6, 1946.

Academician Ivan Petrovich Pavlov is the first Russian Nobel prizewinner, the honourable doctor of the Cambridge University, member of 132 academies and societies, dean of physiologists of the world. Pavlov's scientific activity lasted more than six decades. All the most outstanding achievements are connected with his name in the field of physiology of blood circulation, digestion and the highest nervous activity.

The main law in I.P. Pavlov's House-Museum is that the visitor is the most desired person, and it is everyone's duty to make him as comfortable as possible.

The house was built by Ivan Pavlov's grandfather. In 1888 Pavlov's father built the second house which in 1900 Lidia the Pavlov's sister got by the right of succession. Since 1974 this house is known as the House of Science.

There is a big garden, which was set by young Ivan Pavlov together with brothers and father. There is a pergola in the depth of the garden. This house was used as a fine summer residence.
The memorial complex consists of: the parental house, the house of the sister, outdoor constructions and a garden with the pergola.

Exposition
In the parental house there are 12 small rooms. The drawing room is a biggest room in the house. Here musical evenings were hold and the scientist's mother sang romances.

The father, who was a priest, had a fine library in his study. During the evenings Peter, the father of the scientist, arranged the family readings for children. In the mother's room one can see her fine needlework: coverlet and napkins. Varvara Ivanovna was good at sewing, embroidery and knitting.

In the dining room each member of the family had a certain place. The oldest son Ivan sat on the right hand from the father.
In the Ivan's room there were always hot discussions about meaning of the life. On the desk there are his personal belongings.
The interior of Peter's room tells that he was a zoologist and the passionate hunter.
Stock
More than 600 exhibits are placed in halls of museum. The family relics and Pavlov's personal belongings, collection of documentary materials, Pavlov's correspondence with his wife, his letters to relatives and friends are unique part of the stock. Pavlov's voice was recorded on the tape.

Lifetime editions of Pavlov's works and books with his autograph have a great bibliographic value. The museum has 8095 exhibits; in the last five years the museum has purchased 837 exhibits.
The museum presents materials of Pavlov's readings and also materials of the Russian-American symposium (1994).

Students and pupils can use the museum's library. The museum has it's own club of friends. In the museum's cinema hall one can see documentary films about I.P. Pavlov.
